The 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup season was boosted into the public eye by new television deals with FOX Sports and NBC, and for the first time the qualifying races for the Daytona 500 were broadcast. The Daytona 500 itself was an exciting race, but it ended in tragedy as Dale Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap crash.
Because of Earnhardt's death -- the fourth in nine months among drivers in NASCAR's top three racing divisions -- additional safety requirements were implemented for NASCAR drivers, and the season continued with higher-than-ever television ratings. Jeff Gordon, now 31 years old, ended the season on top, making him the youngest four-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion in history.
