Parlaying consistency, Lee Petty took the points lead in mid May and cruised to a 283-point victory in the 1954 NASCAR Grand National championship chase.
Two-time champion Herb Thomas gave chase, but was unable to catch the smooth-driving Petty. Petty logged 32 top-10 finishes in the 34 races he started. Thomas won 12 times and had 27 top-10 finishes. Buck Baker, who led the standings for six weeks in early spring, wound up third in the standings on the strength of four wins.
Petty won seven races during the season, including the Daytona Beach NASCAR Grand National event. He only finished out of the top five in 10 races. The 1954 championship was sweet revenge for Petty, who lost the 1950 title when NASCAR docked him 849 points for competing in a non-NASCAR-sanctioned event. The following chart
