Though NASCAR's first sanctioned races featured prewar-vintage Modified coupes -- with hopped-up engines, stiffened suspensions, and lightened bodies -- the Strictly Stock division that debuted in 1949 quickly became the main attraction and eventually evolved into today's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series.
