A new convertible joined the exotic-car class when the 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe' went on sale in summer 2007. Based on the company's Phantom sedan, the convertible is ten inches shorter and wears distinct but similar exterior styling, has a power soft top, seats four, and features unique rear-hinged power-closing doors. A 453-hp 6.75-liter V12 is the only engine offered; it's based on one that's optional for parent-company BMW's 7-Series sedans and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Safety equipment includes head-and-torso side airbags, ABS, antiskid system, and rear rollover bars designed to deploy in an impending tip. An extensive list of standard features is augmented by popular options that include chrome 21-inch wheels, a teak tonneau cover, and stainless-steel hood and windshield surround.
