2008 Mazda RX-8 Review
The 2008 Mazda RX-8 is little changed. This four-passenger sporty coupe is unique for using a rotary engine, which replaces pistons pumping in cylinders with triangular rotors spinning in oval chambers. It also has rear access doors that don't open independently of the fronts. RX-8 comes in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring models. Each has a 232-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 212-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed automatic. The automatic allows manual shifting via floor lever or steering-wheel paddles. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Mazda offers a special Anniversary model to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its rotary engine. Special features include Metropolitan Gray exterior paint, a Cosmo Red leather interior, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, suspension enhancements, and specific badging. A firmer suspension, 18-inch wheels, and limited-slip differential are optional for the automatic-transmission Sport, standard otherwise. Exclusive to the Grand Touring and Anniversary models are leather upholstery, heated front seats, power driver seat, and keyless entry and starting.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The Sporty/Performance Car class consists of two-seat roadsters, 4-cylinder hatchbacks, and V8 muscle cars. Regardless of configuration, all have an emphasis on affordable performance.

Our Best Buys include the Mazda MX-5 and Scion tC. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Mustang and Mini Cooper. New this year is the Mini Cooper Clubman.

News
Late word from Japan and Detroit is that Mazda won't do a two-seat RX-8 after all. The company is said to feel the car wouldn't draw enough sales to cover design and manufacturing costs. The RX-8 itself is rumored for a 2010-model redesign that bows in early 2009. Nothing major should happen to the current model before then, but Mazda promises improved dealer treatment for RX-8 owners, many of whom have endured assorted engine problems.
