The "nothing but all-wheel drive" maker rolled out the third generation of its compact SUV at the Detroit show.
Significantly updated for the first time since 2003, the 2009 Forester sports a longer body, greater ground clearance, and a little more power.
For '09, Forester's wheelbase is stretched nearly four inches to 103. Subaru claims that the additional cabin space is put to good use with added legroom for both front and rear passengers.
Giving Forester a shot of machismo is a ground clearance lift to nine inches. The added inch of height, combined with more aggressive styling, gives the 2009 a truckier look than its predecessor.
Power will again come from a 2.5-liter "boxer" 4-cylinder engine available in standard and turbocharged trim. Both versions of the engine have been tweaked for additional power. As with all Subarus sold in the U.S., Forester will come only with all-wheel drive.
Look for the redesigned Forester in Subaru showrooms before summer.
