2005 Volvo S80 Review
Available run-flat tires and real-wood interior trim are among 2005 additions to Volvo's flagship sedan. S80s have a turbocharged engine and an automatic transmission. The 2.5T models have a 208-hp 5-cyl and a 5-speed automatic. T6s have a 268-hp inline 6-cyl and 4-speed automatic with manual shift gate. 2.5Ts offers front- or all-wheel drive. T6s are front-drive only. Traction control, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, front side airbags, and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard. Leather upholstery, sunroof, and an antiskid system are standard on T6s, optional on 2.5Ts. The 2.5Ts come with 16-inch wheels and are newly available with a Sport option package that includes 17s and sport seats. T6s come with 17s and are newly available with optional 18s. Run-flat tires on 17-inch wheels are new options for front-drive S80s. Optional for T6s, and now for the front-drive 2.5T, is Volvo's Four-C adjustable suspension with driver-selectable Comfort or Sport settings. For '05, real wood replaces synthetic as standard cabin trim on T6s and as part of the 2.5T's Premium Package. S80 offers an optional navigation system. And T6 Premier's rear seat is no longer angled for 2 inches more leg room, though it does include DVD and TV-tuner video. A refrigerator is optional. No longer available for any S80 is Volvo's On-Call Plus assistance system.

News
Sources now expect a redesigned S80 won't surface until sometime in 2007, which likely makes it an '08 model for the U.S. The makeover was once portrayed as a "re-engineering and restyling" job, but recent spy photos show more rounded body lines suggesting a clean-sheet redo. And in fact, we've heard talk of a 2-inch longer wheelbase and modest increases to other dimensions. Regardless, the new S80 reportedly retains front-wheel drive and available AWD, rather than reverting to rear drive as previously thought. Look for updated versions of today's 5- and 6-cyl engines, plus a possible 4.4-liter V8 option borrowed from the XC90 SUV. There's also been talk of a new S80-based "V90" flagship wagon, but this looks like a long-shot. Apparently, Volvo feels the model would cost too much to sell very well, even in the affluent U.S. market.
