2002 BMW 7-Series Review
BMW redesigns its flagship sedan for 2002, with fresh styling, an innovative control layout, and the industry's first 6-speed automatic transmission. The 745Li version is 5.5 inches longer than the 745i to provide more rear leg room. Both grow slightly in length, height, and width vs. the 1995-2001 models, and are about 120 lb heavier. A 4.4-liter V8 continues in both, but it's a new design with an additional 43 hp. The 6-speed automatic operates from a steering-column lever. Joining standard antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and a traction-control/antiskid system is BMW's new Active Roll Stabilization designed to counteract body lean in turns. An optional Adaptive Ride Package has automatically adjusting shock absorbers and rear self-leveling system. Both models have 18-inch wheels or optional 19s.

Inside, front knee airbags join torso and head-protecting side airbags. Optional rear torso side airbags come with head-protecting airbags running the full interior length on each side. Sensors deploy any airbag only if an occupant is detected. These 7s introduce BMW's iDrive with a console "joystick" knob to operate audio, navigation, and some phone and climate functions. The settings display on a dashboard screen. Conventional switches are also featured for basic audio and climate adjustments. Among options are a power trunklid, front- and rear-obstacle detection, break-resistant window glass, power rear sunshades, and front seats with internal fan ventilation. A V12 replacement for the 750iL is due for 2003.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
The 7-Series posted a 9-percent year-to-year drop in U.S. sales for calendar 2000, then an 8.5-percent decline for the first half of 2001. These results parallel the sharp downturn in the general economy, but also the somewhat elderly design vs that of high-luxury rivals.

Now, of course, BMW has rejuvenated its flagship sedans, though it remains to be seen whether sales will improve in the much-changed climate after the September 11th attacks. The only near-term news to report (as mentioned in Highlights above) is a new-generation V12 model for 2003. Likely to bow next fall, this 760Li shares the long platform of the V8 745Li, but packs a clean-sheet 6.0-liter engine producing 325 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque in U.S. trim. The new top-line 7 should come with most every feature that's optional on lesser models, plus a few gizmos of its own, so expect Tiffany's pricing, perhaps just under $100-grand.
