The 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S fastback coupe, part of the 1987 Shelby Chager GLH-S series
1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S fastback coupe

The 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S was a "Shelbyized" edition of the L-body Dodge hatchback coupe, related to the Omni-based GLH-S in the same way that ordinary Chargers related to workaday Omnis.

Be careful not to confuse the 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S with the 1982-1987 Shelby Charger, a relatively low-power volume model sold as a Dodge, not a Shelby. The 1987 Shelby Charger was identical to the GLH-S five-door mechanically, and similar in chassis specs and equipment.

Pluses of the 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S:

  • Decent economy
  • Fast (under 8 seconds 0-60 mph)
  • Fun to drive (wear earplugs, though)
  • Hatch-back practical
  • Racier coupe styling than the 1986-1987 Shelby GLH-S
  • Used-car prices still apply

Minuses of the 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S:

  • Marked torque-steer
  • Mediocre fit and finish
  • No more refined than the 1986-1987 Shelby GLH-S
  • Rocky ride
  • Ultimate collectibility unclear at present
  • Unwanted turbo lag
