The 1973-1975 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds was a continuation of the specialty mid-size Oldsmobiles created and marketed by Hurst, now based on the "Colonnade" bodyshell introduced for 1973.

As before, the powertrain for these cars was built around the 455 big-block V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic with Dual-Gate shifter, embellished with special paint schemes, color-keyed road wheels, radial tires, and special H/O regalia. You had your choice of two colors in '73: white or black with contrasting gold trim.

The following year, the H/O was again chosen for Indy Official Pace Car duty and was issued with appropriate decals for the owner to apply. For the first time, buyers could have either the "W-30" big-block or a smaller 350 V-8 (option code Y-77), a sign of the move away from performance in the wake of the first fuel crisis. Of the year's total production, 1,420 units had the smaller V-8.

Performance was de-emphasized even more for 1975 in favor a new T-top roof treatment with removable glass panels, a business Hurst was beginning to get into to make up for the sag in its aftermarket speed equipment sales. The '75 was based on the heavier, formal-roof Cutlass Supreme model rather than the semi-fastback Cutlass S used for the 1973-74 H/Os, and the detuned engines necessitated by stiffening emissions controls make these cars less fiery than their predecessors.

Nevertheless, they are interesting newer models that attempted to keep the performance spirit of the '60s alive in an age when everything seemed to be working against development and sale of enthusiast cars. This plus low production make the last Hurst-built H/Os possible collector-car comers down the road.
